This research study looked at how participating in online social groups with peers can help individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) improve their social communication skills. The study included 40 participants with ASD who completed 5-8 sessions of social groups over an 8 week period. Each participant was placed in a group with others who had similar communication levels and participated in online conversations and activities with a trained facilitator and other neurotypical and ASD youths. The sessions were recorded and analyzed to assess the participants' social engagement and emotional health. The results showed that 80% of the participants had significant improvements in social communication skills as measured by equity of speech production. The study suggests that online social groups can be a useful way for individuals with ASD to practice and apply the social skills they have learned in interventions.
